"Save the Girls" motorcycle rally

Trenton Soroptimist’s 12th Annual Charity Motorcycle Ride - “Save the Girls”

The chance to help many in need brought about one hundred bikers to the Soroptimist
International of Trenton Area’s 12th annual women-sponsored motorcycle rally. Everyone was smiling at Biker Bob’s Harley-Davidson in Taylor on Saturday, September 12. Good friends, good weather, good food, good prizes, and good causes equaled a great result.

The women of SI of Trenton Area have previously raised over $150,000 to benefit human trafficking awareness, domestic violence shelters, women’s health issues, and other service projects. Oakwood Beaumont Southshore, Vista Maria, and First Step are the “special focus” for the fundraisers. Soroptimists worldwide work to improve the lives of women and girls through local and global service and donations.

Debbie Dingell joined the festivities, as well as Soroptimist regional officers Vicky Hicks, Vivian Walczesky, Cheryl Faust, and Cindi Ames. Neighboring Wyandotte/Southgate/Taylor Soroptimists assisted with the venue activities. Police escorts from Wyandotte, Taylor, Sumpter, and Huron teamed with the Motor City Chapter and Motown Chapter H.O.G. groups and road captains to lead the way on the 56- mile ride. Senior Road Captain, Larry Suban, started the event with a safe riding lesson.

Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) were present with their new chapter, and Metro Church joined to get firsthand information about human trafficking awareness. S.O.A.P. (Save Our Adolescents from Predators) were also present to share their information with the public.

Registration to participate in the annual ride included a full buffet-style dinner provided by Veronica’s Catering, and DJ’s Dancin’ Knights added the musical entertainment.
Capping off the day were the 50/50 raffles and specialty gift baskets.

The public is cordially invited to upcoming events sponsored by Trenton Soroptimists:

Presentations of Body and Sold, a play about teenagers who are lured and seduced into prostitution, as told by human trafficking victims; October 14 at Woodhaven High School, October 15 at Wayne State University Community Arts Auditorium, October 16 at Penelope’s Venue, and October 17 at Trenton Village Theater.

Screening of Nefarious: Merchant of Souls, a documentary that gives an in-depth look at human trafficking. The venue is at the Woodhaven Emagine Theater on November 5.

Scholarship/needs awards applications.
