New Law Lets Community Service Pay Old Driver Responsibility Fees
For qualified drivers, 10 hours of volunteering could take care of certain outstanding citation fees.

A new law will let drivers take care of outstanding driver responsibility fees by volunteering time instead of volunteering dollars, Lansing News/MLive reports.

The new measure, signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday, applies to past driving without a license or proof of insurance citations that also were assessed an additional two-year fee to the ticket, the report stated. Those fees were dropped in 2012, and more are set to be eliminated by 2019, the report added.

Under the new law, the Secretary of the Treasury’s office will contact eligible drivers who will be able to pay off old fees with 10 hours of community service, the report stated. Drivers still will need to pay the $125 fee to reinstate their licenses, though, the report added.
