“We are very happy to be able to showcase and assist the Art Therapy program of Beaumont Children’s at our new cafe,” said Liz Rose, Owner, New Order Coffee. "Our involvement is not only exciting for our café staff, but we are all thrilled to support this unique program, which benefits so many kids at the hospital."

Art therapy provides stress relieving activities that encourage children to express themselves during their hospital stay, strengthening their physical and emotional being. Beaumont Children’s art therapist offers group and individual sessions designed to encourage creative expression while children are in the hospital.

As part of the Art Therapy program, children were asked to visualize themselves as superheroes. The goal was to empower patients throughout their hospitalization by recognizing their inner strengths. In early 2019, Erin Shahly, Board Registered Art Therapist at Beaumont Children’s, worked closely with patients and their families to select possible designs under a theme of empowerment that would translate well onto merchandise and begin the Beaumont Children’s ArtsRx initiative. Seven designs were chosen.

Designs from Brady (6 yrs), Brandy (8 yrs) and Anna (17 yrs), were added to 8 oz. ceramic coffee mugs. Guests donating $14.95 for one mug or $24.95 for two, have their choice of designs. In addition, greeting cards with blank insides are offered with designs from four other children: Allison (17 yrs), Maggie (7 yrs), Kiera (15 yrs) and LeChoyne (12 yrs). A donation of $4.95 per card is requested. Each piece comes with a message from the artist regarding his or her work. New Order Coffee is donating 100% of the proceeds to support the Art Therapy program at Beaumont Children’s.

Guests attending the March 5 event will have the first opportunity to purchase the mugs and cards. New Order Coffee is known for creating blends of in-house roasts. They will be serving these blends and other refreshments and house-made pastries to guests. Beau the Bear, Beaumont Children’s lovable mascot, and members of Beaumont Children’s Child Life Services team will be on hand to unveil the products. There is no fee to participate in this event at the cafe located at: 30955 Woodward Ave, Suite 715, Royal Oak.

Beaumont Children’s Art Therapy program is made possible by funds donated through the Children’s Miracle Network. Beaumont Children’s is the only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Southeast Michigan.
