Student Tests Positive for TB, Schools Take Precautions

A Utica student has tested positive for tuberculosis.

The student, who also attended classes at Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, is no longer in school, and crews are disinfecting both schools, according to a report on Fox 2-Detroit.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that attacks the lungs, most often, but can attack different parts of the body.

It’s also a very rare disease in modern times, with only 9,421 cases reported in the United States in 2014, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Parents were notified Wednesday there was no “imminent threat” and no need to panic.

Macomb County Health Department officials are working with the schools with the hopes of identifying those who may have been exposed to the disease.

The department says that skin testing will be available to those who were exposed.
