Black Friday Mall, Store Hours: Where to Shop

Some malls and mall stores scale back on Thanksgiving hours; many national chains move full-speed ahead; one closes for Black Friday.

Black Friday is still a thing, but it’s not the big thing it’s been in past years.

Last year, retail spending slid 11 percent, to $50.9 billion from $57.4 billion, over the four-day shopping frenzy from Thanksgiving Day through the weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

That happened despite the fact that more stores than ever before encroached on Thanksgiving and began offering Black Friday deals on Thursday. They suffered a backlash for it from labor and consumer groups and ubiquitous social media memes, and this year, more stores are opting out of Thanksgiving hours.

There are still holdouts, of course, but employees at several national chains will be able to stay home when the pumpkin pie is served and enjoy a full day of football.

Among the stores foregoing Thanksgiving hours are Apple, At Home, Barnes & Noble, Cabela’s, Burlington Coat Factory, Costco, Crate and Barrel, DSW, GameStop, Home Goods, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Menards, Nordstrom, Pier 1 Imports, Pottery Barn, Staples, T.J. Max and Hennes & Mauritz can stay home for a second helping of pumpkin pie.

Many national chains are open for Thanksgiving hours, including Walgreen’s and Meijer, which will be open all day, and JCPenney, which opens at 3 p.m. Some others are Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s, Kmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Office Depot, Gordman’s and Sports Authority

REI is eschewing Black Friday sales as well as Thanksgiving hours. The chain has stores in Troy, Northville and Ann Arbor.

Black Friday has traditionally been one of the 5.5 million member consumer cooperative’s 10 busiest days and the chain will no doubt take a fourth-quarter sales hit, but “we think that Black Friday has gotten out of hand,” CEO Jerry Stritzke told CNN Money last month.

Many Michigan malls are opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and closing at midnight.

One exception is Twelve Oaks in Novi, which will remain open until 2 a.m. on Black Friday, then reopen a few hours later at 7 a.m.
