‘The Real Deal': Dazon Cole Heads to the Atlanta Braves

West Bloomfield Hills High School student Dazon Cole was the ace pitcher for his baseball team, the Lakers. Now, he's the first high school player from Michigan to be drafted in last week's pick to the Major Leagues.

West Bloomfield Hills High School student Dazon Cole will play on the summer travel team before the Atlanta Braves make him a final offer to join the team full-time.

Cole was selected in the 29th round of the draft. He waited three days to find out if he would be drafted, and it came on the same day as his last game of the season with the Lakers.

The Lakers lost that game to Brighton in the Division 1 regional baseball finals tournament on Saturday, so It was a bittersweet moment for Cole when he found out he was drafted to Atlanta Braves, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Still, “it’s such a blessing,” he told MIPrepZone.com

At only 5-feet, 11-inches, Cole doesn’t fit the Major League norm, but he’s determined to prove he has what it takes to go all the way. His blazing-fast pitch has been clocked at 90 mph, and he has been closely watched college and pro recruiters for most of his prep career.

"It's time for me to go out and do it and make my family and my hometown proud," he said.

“Dazon is a special kid, a special talent,"  West Bloomfield High School head baseball coach Eric Pierce told MIPrepZone  "His arm, strength and work ethic are out of this world and then you add to it, he’s probably the most humble kid I’ve ever met, you have the total package.

"He’s a great player and a great person, and he’s brought so much to our program this year. The fact that the big league organizations have come calling shows you he’s the real deal.”

Cole told the Detroit Free Press: “ I will have to go out there and show them what I have.”
