West Bloomfield Youths Get Down and Dirty For Detroit

As the city of Detroit fights to get out of debt, the lack of economic stability has taken a toll on the city's neighborhoods. Good Girl Comeback is taking matters into its own hands and using youth to combat the issue.

As a part of Detroit’s adopt-a-park initiative Chelsea Gheesling will be taking a group of 15 youth to Detroit to clean a half-acre of neglected land on June 17.

Gheesling is the founder of Good Girl Comeback, a nonprofit organization that encourages girls to become independent thinkers, and virtuous leaders who are good to themselves and others.

“The mission for the Good Girl Comeback is to encourage confidence in teens in our area, and for them to see the goodness in themselves and others,” Gheesling told The Daily Tribune. “One of the best ways to do that is putting others before yourself, helping others and having new experiences. That’s why I encourage activities like these.”

Gheesling wants to encourage students to get active in their communities. A blog created by Gheesling called Chick in the Mitt adopted the land located at Carrie Avenue and Brimson Street, along with the blog’s co-writer Courtney Taylor.

Gheesling and her organization volunteer monthly and also encourage men to come and volunteer as well. Volunteers pick up trash, mow, and weed for about four hours before they make their way back to West Bloomfield for lunch.

There are still slots open if you’re interested in volunteering. It’s free, and transportation is provided. Gheesling and Taylor have committed to maintaining the land until Oct.31. For more information go to www.goodgirlcomeback.com
