Dining with Metro Detroit's 'Top Chef' Stars
James Rigato and Mei Lin became friends on Season 12 of "Top Chef." They'll combine their culinary talents in special holiday creations.

This is a two-fer you can’t afford to pass up — if you have $165 to spare and don’t mind a four-hour or so drive, that is.
“Top Chef” stars James Rigato and Mei Lin will be preparing a holiday dinner in Petoskey at the Twisted Olive, where master sommelier Ron Edwards will pair seasonal selections with the chefs’ celebrated cuisine..

The experience also includes time to chat with Metro Detroit natives Lin and Rigato, who became friends on the show, filmed in 2014 in Boston and Mexico. Lin often visits and has cooked alongside Rigato at his newly-opened Mabel Gray in Hazel Park. Rigato also teamed with Edwards for previous wine dinners at his restaurant The Root Restaurant & Bar in White Lake.
Lin, the Season 12 “Top Chef” winner, was born in China and grew up in Michigan, where she honed her cooking skills alongside her father at their family-owned restaurant. From there, she moved to work at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago in Las Vegas and Michael Voltaggio’s ink. in Los Angeles.

She appeared on Esquire TV’s “Knife Fight,” and was named one of Eater’s Young Guns in 2014 and Zagat’s 30 under 30 in 2015.
Rigato, named Food & Wine magazine’s 2015 People’s Best New Chef: Great Lakes Region, recently opened his second restaurant, Mabel Gray, at 23825 John R. Road in Hazel Park. The 40-seat renovated diner features a moderately priced whimsical and artisan menu of rotating Michigan-sourced fare.
He also co-owns The Root Restaurant and Bar in White Lake, named the Detroit Fre Press 2012 Restaurant of the Year.
Edwards is a master sommelier and master educator for the Court of Master Sommeliers. Along with advising on the wine selections at Twisted Olive in Petoskey, his many accolades include appearances on The Weather Channel and Cooking Channel.
He’s the founder of Wine Talk Media, host of Wine Talk Radio, creator of the Grapevine School of Wine and co-founder of Bottle Rocket, a wine and culinary image consultancy serving New York, Chicago, Denver and Washington D.C. He advises some of the nation’s top chefs, renowned restaurants and hospitality franchises.
