Fatal Home Fire in Highland Township Remains Under Investigation

A 64-year-old Highland Township woman was rescued from her burning home, but died at a hospital.

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — A 64-year-old Highland Township woman perished in a fire in her home Friday night, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

Deputies from the sheriff’s office and Highland Township Fire Department responded about 9 p.m. to the woman’s home on the 2000 block of Steward Court. Deputies entered the residence,but were overcome by smoke and had to exit, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Highland Township firefighters arrived a short time later and entered the home through a bedroom window and brought her out, the release said. She was treated at the scene by paramedics from Star EMS before transporting her to McLaren Osteopathic Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m.

The Highland Township Fire Department extinguished the fire and requested the assistance of the OCSO Fire Investigations Unit. The cause of the fire is unknown, but remains under investigation.

An autopsy will be performed by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office.
