Father, 4-Year-Old Son Die in Highland Township Ice-Fishing Accident

A father and son were fishing on Alderman Lake when they fell into the water.

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, MI - A 30-year-old Highland Township man and his 4-year-old son died Monday morning after they fell through the ice while ice fishing on Alderman Lake in Highland Township, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The victims, David Lyons and his son, Jackson Lyons. were fishing approximately 250 to 300 feet off shore when they fell through thin ice, according to a police statement.

The sheriff’s office’s Highland Township Substation commander, Lt. Matt Snyder, along with deputies andHighland Township Fire Department and Star EMS immediately responded to the lake to begin rescue efforts about 10:55 a.m.

Both the man and his son, who haven’t been identified, were recovered in 8 to 10 feet of water. They were pronounced dead at Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce Township.

“This is a horrific reminder that we should always hold safety first when we undertake water related activities,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. “No ice is safe ice especially due to the mild weather we have experienced this winter. Our thoughts are with the family during this unthinkable time.”

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Marine Unit.
