Rep. Runestad unveils plan to help protect seniors from abuse
State Rep. Jim Runestad announces plan to better identify signs of elder abuse, neglect

State Rep. Jim Runestad today announced a plan to help better identify signs of abuse in senior citizens and other vulnerable adults.
Runestad, of White Lake, said older residents who rely on others for care are particularly susceptible to physical and emotional abuse, neglect and financial exploitation. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, nearly one in every 10 seniors is the victim of neglect or abuse.
“Many seniors suffer in silence because they are too scared or ashamed to speak up,” Runestad said. “Unfortunately, the signs of abuse are also hard to spot, which too often means the crime goes unreported.”

Runestad’s plan calls for the development of a detailed report to guide law enforcement officers who respond to incidents involving vulnerable adults. The form will prompt officers to make observations and ask questions that expose the signs of neglect and abuse.
“With the proper training and tools, our law enforcement officers can serve as an important resource to ensure grandparents get the help they need,” Runestad said.
