A 10-week-old kitten, Misty Gish, was stolen from the Humane Society’s Detroit Center for Animal Care around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3. Surveillance video shows the theft after a woman entered the cat socializing area with a young girl.
According to a news release, the woman sent the child outside to ensure no volunteers were watching, then shoved the gray and white kitten into her purse and walked out of the shelter.

After leaving the shelter, the woman and child left in what appears to be a 1990s Lexus sedan, the Humane Society said.
Debby MacDonald, the Humane Society’s chief cruelty investigator, called the theft a “deplorable act” compounded by the involvement of a child.
“It’s even more disheartening that a young girl was used to help in this crime, and that the kitten was shoved into a purse on a 90-degree day,” MacDonald said.
The woman has a dark complexion and copper-colored hair. She was wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts and sunglasses, and was carrying a large purse. The child was wearing a pink T-shirt and pink sneakers.
The kitten was recently spayed, has a shaved belly and a tattoo (a circle with a line through it to indicate she has been spayed). The kitten also has a microchip and has been reported as missing.
Anyone with information regarding this stolen kitten to contact the MHS Cruelty Hotline at (313) 872-3401.
