Man Charged in Trooper's Death Jailed Over Fish Sandwich

Judge admonishes man accused of striking trooper's motorcycle, dragging him four miles under trailer: "... We are not kidding around."

Michigan State Police Trooper Chad Wolf died on Aug. 28 after he was struck on his department-issued motorcycle and dragged for about four miles.

The Waterford Township man charged in the Aug. 28 dragging death of Michigan State Police Trooper Chad Wolf was led from an Oakland County courtroom in handcuffs Friday after allegedly violating the conditions of his house arrest three times in two weeks.

Among Charles Raymond Warren’s alleged violations: Visiting a restaurant drive-through lane with his wife to get a sandwich after a medical appointment without informing his parole officer. Warren, 69, is also accused of making stops at a Home Depot and a Meijer store without first clearing it. His wife was driving each time, according to media reports.

That didn’t sit well with 52nd District Court Judge Kelley Kostin, who modified Warren’s bond to $100,000 cash or 10 percent. That means Warren, who is charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident in Wolf’s death, will have to post $10,000 to get out of jail.

“He’s not following my orders and I have some real concerns,” Kostin said from the bench. “... It’s getting clear to me that his attitude is ‘I am going to do what I want to do and I will explain it later.’ ... I want him to understand we are not kidding around.”

Warren’s attorney, Neil Rockind, told The Detroit News he was surprised by Kostin’s order, and suggested his client was handcuffed for “show” in an emotionally charged case.

“I have been doing this for 23 years,” Rockind said. “You send someone to jail for a fish sandwich? It’s ridiculous.”

Rockind expected his client to post the required $10,000 bond Friday night, but it’s unclear if that happened. Oakland County Jail inmate online search records haven’t been updated since Thursday.

Warren’s parole officer also reported to the judge that Warren has failed to file a schedule of his daily appointments, and didn’t show up for a test to determine if he is abusing alcohol or drugs.

Wolf, 38, was on routine patrol on Dixie Highway near I-75 in Springfield Township at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 when Warren, who was hauling a utility trailer behind his vehicle, abruptly switched lanes and allegedly struck Wolf’s department-issued motorcycle, police have said.

Warren reportedly dragged the trooper for about four miles before stopping at a rest stop to check possible trouble with his vehicle. According to The Detroit News, the trailer lacked proper lighting, and wasn’t registered or licensed.

Warren is next due in court on Jan. 13 for his preliminary examination. If convicted of either of the felony charges against him, he could go to prison for 15 years.
