Women's Health Care Classic leaders witness dollars at work at Beaumont's Breast Care Center

In June 2018, Beaumont Health Foundation’s annual Women’s Health Care Classic (WHC) raised more than $350,000 for women’s breast care programs and services at Beaumont Hospitals in Dearborn, Trenton and Wayne. The event hosted 244 golfers at two different courses: women-only at Dearborn Country Club; and both men and women at the TPC of Michigan.

Recently, the Beaumont Health Foundation invited co-chairs and WHC title sponsors to visit the Beaumont Breast Care Center in Dearborn to see the philanthropic dollars at work. They learned about the latest diagnostic equipment obtained from WHC proceeds. Attending the visit were: Thomas Lanni, chief operating officer at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn; co- chairs Bob and Nancy Zakar and the founding chairwoman of the event Jan Fitzgerald (not in attendance co-chair Dolores Pfeffer); and title sponsors Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer and Dr. Donald Conn with the practice of Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe and Associates.

Dr. Sophia Roumanis, section head of Breast Imaging and Intervention, Beaumont Breast Care Center, Dearborn, demonstrated the Invenia Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) unit and thanked the group for their continued support.

“We are committed to informing patients about breast density and offering supplemental screening options,” said Dr. Roumanis. “We are thrilled to add to our breast cancer screening program and allow better visibility of dense breast tissue during breast cancer screenings.”

Due to event philanthropy, Beaumont Breast Care Center in Dearborn is the first facility in the nation to install the GE Healthcare technology. It is an alternative to other supplemental screening options for women with dense breast tissue and is the only FDA-approved ultrasound for breast cancer screening. Approximately 40 percent of women in the U.S. have dense breasts, which are identified by routine screening mammograms.

Throughout its 26 year history, the WHC golf event has raised more than $6.4 million for hospital programs in Wayne County. The Beaumont Health Foundation will soon be working with community leaders and volunteers to plan the 27th year with the 2019 tournament scheduled for June 10 again at the Dearborn Country Club and TPC Michigan in Dearborn.
