Obeshaw had lived with Watson and her boyfriend in Belleville before recently moving to a home in Taylor, police said. He was described as mentally unstable.

Family friends told WXYZ-TV that Obeshaw had taken a liking to the child and frequently accompanied Emma and her mother to soccer practice. Police said in a news release “there was what appeared to be friendly interaction between the three at the start of practice.”

Soccer practice had ended about 8 p.m. when Obeshaw shot Emma and her mother as they prepared to leave in their vehicle, police said. He shot Emma first, then her mother, police said.

A motive for the shooting remains unclear, according to police.

“Police found evidence that Obeshaw believed someone was trying to perform mind control on him,” according to a news release from the Taylor Police Department.

Police said Obeshaw registered a handgun in Belleville in September.

The situation unfolded at the Taylor Sportsplex on Telegraph Road between North Line and Eureka roads in Taylor, where the woman had taken her daughter to a soccer practice, WWJ reports.

The motive and relationship between the man and the two victims is unknown.

The child’s mother was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn for treatment, but the child was airlifted to Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, according to the report.

WDIV-TV said both were in critical condition Friday morning.

The man was declared dead at the scene.
