Suspect in High School Shooting Threat in Custody

A suspect believed to have sent an email threatening a school shooting has been taken into custody and is expected to face charges.

An email threat received through the city of Dearborn’s website early Monday morning to “contact Divine Child High School about a school shooting today” was a hoax, police said.

Police notified officials at Divine Child, a private Catholic high school, and a response plan was initiated. Several uniformed police officers provided a high visibility presence on the campus while others conducted a criminal investigation that revealed the email originated in Lincoln Charter Township in western Michigan.

Police Chief Ronald Haddad said Divine Child students and staff were never at risk.

“The very visible response by our department was to ensure the safety of our children at Divine Child and the other nearby schools,” Haddad said in a statement.

“While there is no information to believe that this was anything more than a threat, we will spare no resource or effort to ensure the safety of our community,” he said. “We will always err on the side of caution in these situations.”

Authorities in Lincoln Township located responded to the residence where it was believed the suspect was located and took him into custody on unrelated arrest warrants, according to the statement.

Dearborn is continuing its investigation, and it is expected that criminal charge will be filed. Until then, the suspect’s name is being withheld.
