Wyandotte High School Diver Feels Better But Still in Hospital
Grand Rapids coach who helped save Roosevelt High School student Friday suffered heart attack after rescue.

The health of the Wyandotte high school diver hospitalized Friday after passing out underwater before a state meet in Holland is improving, according to a News-Herald report.
Roosevelt High School student Nolan Gutenschwager, 16, was still in a Grand Rapids hospital as of Monday but began talking in a limited fashion, the report stated. Doctors remain concerned about his right lung and continue to monitor it, the report added.

Nolan is thought to have had a seizure while he did a practice dive into the pool Friday, March 13, during warm-ups before the state diving title meet in Holland. The teen has a history of seizures, but he hadn’t suffered one for more than two years, and there are no tests to determine if it was the cause Friday, the report stated.
However, doctors believe it probably was a seizure, because Nolan didn’t injure his head on the dive, and other causes for him passing out were eliminated, the report added.

After Nolan passed out, diving team coaches pulled him from the bottom of the pool, and a lifeguard performed CPR on the boy, the report stated.
