MINNESOTA— Since the Sunday shooting of Daunte Wright by a police officer, who authorities said meant to use a taser and not a gun, protests and civil unrest have broken out in Brooklyn Center.

Here are some resources to support Brooklyn Center at this time:

  • Brooklyn Center Community Schools is holding an essential item drive at the Blue Barn in the parking lot of the middle and high schools on Humboldt Avenue North. The drive will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. all week. Items needed as of Tuesday include: shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, paper towels, diapers (3+), sanitary wipes, household cleaning items, detergent, soaps, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, the school said on Twitter.
  • Paige Ingram, a community organizer for Brooklyn Center, organized a GoFundMe to support the community. The description states that the funds will go toward PPE, supplies for medics, supplies to protect protesters, and food and other supplies needed by the families who live near the police building.
  • Josh Tolu Olayiwola has organized a GoFundMe with the proceeds going toward supporting the students and families in Brooklyn Center & Brooklyn Park communities. The description said the funds will go towards food, toiletries, housing needs, and emotional support.
  • Holistic Heaux, a Black-owned online store, is taking donations to support Wright's son and girlfriend. Monetary donations can be sent to @$hubby98 on Cashapp, @thuey-jones on Venmo, or @holisticheaux on PayPal. The store is also taking donations for 18-24-month-old clothes, shoes size 6, groceries, and gift cards. They originally asked for size 4 diapers, but out of an abundance of donations, have enough. They recommended diapers in larger sizes for Wright's son to use as he grows.
  • Sahan Journal, a publication that specializes on reporting on communities of color and immigrants, posted a list with more resources.
  • Aaliyah Murray from MN Teen Activists created a GoFundMe for rebuilding businesses damaged in recent civil unrest.

At a press conference on Monday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believes Kim Potter, identified by authorities as the officer who shot Wright, meant to deploy a taser on Wright, but accidentally pulled out a gun instead, killing him.
