Minnesota Certifies 2020 General Election Results

The state canvassing board made the results of Minnesota's 2020 general election official Tuesday.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Minnesota Tuesday became the latest state to certify its 2020 general election results. Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon convened the state canvassing board to review the canvass report.

The board made the following actions:

  • Joe Biden was certified as the winner in the election for U.S. President
    • Biden beat Donald Trump by 233,001 votes, or roughly 7 percent
  • Tina Smith was certified as the winner of the U.S. Senate
  • 8 U.S. House of Representatives contests were certified
  • All state legislative and judicial office races were certified

"The State Canvassing Board has today certified Minnesota's 2020 General Election results," said Secretary Steve Simon in a news release. "I’m proud to officially announce that for the third election in a row, Minnesota voters were number one in the nation in voter turnout."

Minnesota voter stats:

  • The total number of voters was 3,292,997, most votes cast ever
  • 79.95 percent of eligible Minnesotans participated in the 2020 General Election (highest percentage since 1956)
  • 1,906,383 million voters — or about 58 percent of this year's general election voters — cast an absentee ballot
    • The previous highest level was in 2018 (around 24 percent)

"This election was like no other in Minnesota history. The pandemic meant administering the 2020 election using a public health and safety lens," Simon added.

"I made an unprecedented request of Minnesota voters: to consider voting from home with an absentee ballot. Those voters responded in truly remarkable fashion."

The State Canvassing Board follows Article VII, Section 8 in the state constitution:

The returns of every election for officeholders elected statewide shall be made to the secretary of state who shall call to his assistance two or more of the judges of the supreme court and two disinterested judges of the district courts. They shall constitute a board of canvassers to canvass the returns and declare the result within three days after the canvass.

The 2020 state canvassing board includes:

  • Margaret H. Chutich, Associate Justice, Minnesota Supreme Court
  • Gordon L. Moore III, Associate Justice, Minnesota Supreme Court
  • Regina Chu, Judge, Fourth Judicial District Court
  • Christian Sande, Judge, Fourth Judicial District Court
  • Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon
