21-Year-Old Charged With Injuring Man While Driving Drunk

Sophie Smith, of Chaska, has been charged with two felony counts of criminal vehicular operation.

A 21-year-old Chaska woman has been issued a court summons on two felony counts of criminal vehicular operation.

Eden Prairie Police say Sophie Savannah Smith drove drunk and caused a car crash, injuring the driver of the other vehicle.

On Dec. 27 at 8:30 a.m., police responded to a crash on Pioneer Trail, east of Flying Cloud Drive in Eden Prairie. Smith was in the driver's seat of a silver Saab in the left lane eastbound Pioneer Trail. The car had very heavy front end damage, and Smith appeared very upset and was crying.

The second car involved was a gray Chevy Impala. The sole occupant complained of leg, back and neck pain. The car had sustained heavy front left damage.

Officers investigated and observed fresh tire marks that showed where the Saab had struck the left curb, east of the crash, and veered back into the lanes of westbound Pioneer Trail.

Smith allegedly told police that she had been at a party the previous night and had stopped drinking 6-7 hours earlier. A blood test revealed a BAC of .18.

The victim sustained several fractured ribs from the crash.
