It was an exciting night to be an Eagle Saturday as the Eden Prairie High School boys swim and dive team cruised to a first place finish, beating Edina to take the state title for the second time in a row.

The boys won five events throughout the evening, including two relays. And although they were disqualified in the 400 freestyle relay, their depth throughout the meet proved useful.

Seniors Aaron Greenburg and Bryce Boston both won individual events. Boston touched first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 49.86, beating his teammate, Jenia Foster. Greenburg finished his high school career in style, winning both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle.

Distance swimmer Jonathan Lieberman fought to the end in the 500 free. After 20 lengths of the pool he  was out touched by Mounds View’s Noah Lucas, who broke a 1995 record set by Olympian Tom Malchow.

"We're extremely happy," Boston said in an interview with the Star Tribune. "We had a great meet, what we wanted to do."

With a strong finish in the Section 6AA meet last weekend, the Eden Prairie Eagles entered the 2A swimming and diving championship meet Friday, Mar. 1, with momentum.

In the first event of the meet, the Eagle’s 200 yard medley relay broke Edina’s state meet record set in 1991, the oldest all-time record. Aaron Greenberg, Griffin Back, Bryce Boston and Mike Sofelt touched the wall with a time of 1:32,18, almost a full second faster than Edina’s previous time.

The boys rounded out the evening by setting another state meet record in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.10, breaking Edina’s 2010 record.

The team will have 23 individual swims in finals held at the University of Minnesota Saturday night.
