Eden Prairie Swimmers Win Sections, Advance 28 to State Meet

The Eden Prairie Boys High School swim team took the Section 6AA title Saturday.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, the Eden Prairie High School boys swim team cruised their way to a Section 6AA title, breaking six pool records and advancing 28 swimmers to the state meet next weekend.

Eden Prairie started the meet by crushing Edina in the 200 yard medley relay, winning the heat by four seconds.

Seniors Johnathan Lieberman, Aaron Greenburg, Bryce Boston, all won individual events.

Aside from first-place finished, the Eagles’ depth allowed them to beat second place finisher Edina by almost 200 points.

In the 100 yard butterfly, the Eagles placed first, second, third and fourth. The entire heat qualified for state. In the 100 yard freestyle, seniors Aaron Greenburg, Mark Moore and Mike Sofelt took first, sixth and seventh, also qualifying for state.

The 500 yard freestyle, a grueling 20 lengths of the pool, was arguably the best race of the night. Lieberman touched the wall five tenths of a second ahead of Edina’s Erick Huft. Lieberman’s time of 4:33.32 broke the pool and section record.

Winning every relay also pushed the Eagles to Section 6AA victory.

The boys swimming state meet will be held Feb. 28 through March 2 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
