Based on information from Matula’s family, police identified Roe as a "person of interest" and contacted him by phone. Roe agreed to meet with an investigator for questioning, but upon arrival at the Eden Prairie City Center parking lot, he shot himself in the head. Roe was transported to HCMC, and was confirmed as deceased by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner Saturday, May 3.
Police are reviewing both physical and electronic evidence that might lead to Matula’s location, including Roe’s vehicle, cellphone and computer, his home and financial records. This evidence has led police to search in targeted areas around Eden Prairie, Carver County and Stearns County. Based on cellphone and financial records, Roe is confirmed to have stopped at a Maple Grove Standard station and purchased gas at around 4 a.m. on Thursday, May 2.
