Abilities, Not Disabilities: Edina Group Raises Profile of Autistic 'Geniuses'

Campaign trying to change how autism is perceived.

One Edina nonprofit is trying to change the way most people look at autistic children, according to the Star Tribune.

Erik's Ranch and Retreats, a new group focused on providing jobs and living options for autistic young adults, has launched a campaign called "Genuine Genius" in an attempt to profile and highlight the skills of autistic children and teens. Most autistic children tend to be defined by their disabilities and not their abilities, the nonprofit's founder said.

“I just love this program,” the mother of one local autistic child told the newspaper. “It’s going to really help create an awareness about autism while giving families hope.”
