Edina Student Headed to National Geographic Bee

Alexander Conrad, a student at Valley View Middle School, defeated 100 other competitors to win the 2013 Minnesota Geographic Bee.

Valley View Middle School student Alexander Conrad is headed to the National Geographic Bee, after besting all comers during the 2013 Minnesota Geographic Bee on Friday, April 4.

Conrad, a seventh-grader at the Edina school, defeated 100 other competitors for the right to represent Minnesota at the national finals in May. He wins $100, a National Geographic DVD and a fully paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the finals.

Should be come out of the finals successful, Conrad will bring home a $25,000 college scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.

The Edina community had a strong showing at this year's Minnesota Geographic Bee, with Our Lady of Grace student Audrey Gorman finishing in third place. The runner-up this year was Francis Winter of Willmar Middle School.

The National Geographic Bee kicks off May 20 in Washington, D.C. The event will be hosted by famed game show host and television personality Alex Trebek. The Bee is open to students nationwide between fourth and eighth grades.
