Expect Traffic Woes Along Xerxes Avenue, Due to Penn Avenue Detour
The Minneapolis Department of Public Works kicked off Phase I of Penn Avenue's reconstruction this week.

Xerxes Avenue between Hwy. 62 and 50th Street is likely going to be a lot more congested this summer, as traffic is being detoured along the already busy stretch of roadway due to construction along Penn Avenue.
The Minneapolis Department of Public Works recently kicked off Phase I of Penn Avenue's reconstruction this past Wednesday, April 10.
Penn Avenue is currently closed to thru traffic between West 54th and 60th streets. Vehicle and bus traffic is being detoured to Xerxes Avenue via Hwy. 62 and West 50th Street.

According to the project's website, the revamp will include removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, storm drain inlets, and signal upgrades. Phase I is expected to take the entirety of the 2013 construction season.
The entire reconstruction project encompasses Penn Avenue from Hwy. 62 to 100 feet north of 54th Street. The area from 50th to just north of 54th will be completed in 2014.
