Flood Map Changes May Cost Homeowners
New flood maps extended the flood plain designation to include numerous homes.

Some Edina residents may be forced to buy pricy flood insurance after new Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps expanded the flood plain designation to include numerous properties, the Star Tribune reported.
Edina has signed a contract worth up to $30,500 with Barr Engineering to examine elevation data for 150 properties in:
- Rolling Green, just south of Meadowbrook Golf Course,
- Nine Mile Village, just east of Bredesen Park and north of Crosstown Hwy. 62,
- Morningside
The changes occurred because of new maps being put together that have greater elevation detail. That extra elevation detail can change the boundaries of flood plains—but doesn’t take into account the elevation of individual homes.

The stakes are high for homeowners. Federally backed loans require flood insurance for homes in flood plains, and many banks do, as well.
