Loss of house training in a geriatric dog can be dementia

When a geriatric dog starts to urinate in the house, sometimes this is a medical problem, but it can also be due to dementia

Paisley is a 12 year old spayed female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that came in for urinating in the house. It was pretty inconsistent as to when and where, but her owners were getting pretty frustrated with her behavior. After a complete exam was done, a urine analysis was performed and that was normal. We proceeded with x-rays of her abdomen and additional blood work to ensure there wasn’t a medical issue contributing to Paisley’s behavior.

After determining that physically Paisley was sound, we decided to focus on house training for her. After a couple of weeks, her owner’s reported that Paisley was no longer having urinary accidents in the house.

After additional discussion with Paisley’s owners, it was determined this might be early onset of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). We decided to put her on a diet for CDS in hopes that might slow down its degeneration if in fact she has it. That’s the beauty of the diet as it is complete and balanced for our senior pets and is safe to use. We don’t know for sure if Paisley has CDS, but diet is an excellent safe option that can have profound impact on her future life quality.
