Dogs are inquisitive creatures. Often this results in sampling non-food items in attempt to “figure them out”. Coins can be tempting for some, but the good news is that with the exception of pennies minted after 1982, US coins are inert. Any coin can be a risk for obstruction of the intestines if the pet is small or the coin is large but only post-1982 pennies contain enough zinc to cause toxicity.
