Tips to keep a dog happy during cage rest
Is your dog recovering from an injury or surgery? Read these tips!

Extended cage rest is an unfortunate necessity during recovery from many serious maladies. Strict rest of 6 weeks or more may be recommended with recuperation from orthopedic surgery, for the healing process after a ruptured disk in the spine or while undergoing treatment of heartworm disease. Below you will find some tips to keep your dog happy during this time.
- Don’t feed meals from a bowl - make your dog work for all her calories by using food dispensing toys and puzzles. Keep in mind that your pet may also need a restriction in their calories during rest to prevent weight gain.
- Get her brain working with some new tricks involving just movements of the head. Visit this link for some examples from a trainer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfL99xcEpXc&feature=youtu.be
- You can encourage serenity with appeasing pheromones such as Adaptil, meditative music and calming apparel like the Thundershirt.
- For the young or very active, sedative medications may also be needed. Most veterinarians are happy to discuss pharmacologic options for your pet.
