If you own a cat, you know they can be very particular. Providing your cat with a comfortable place to go will reduce the chance of them going outside of the box. Every cat may have a slightly different prefered box or litter type, but their are some universal principles to keep in mind when meeting this very basic feline need.
- You should have one for each cat, plus an extra. This means a single cat household should have 2.
- There should be at least 1 box per floor of regularly used living space.
- A large, open box is best (try Rubbermaid or similar storage bins without the lid).
- Non-scented, clumping litter is almost always preferred. Cats don’t like perfume!
- Boxes should be scooped daily, with the litter replaced and box fully cleaned every week.
- If you ever have to make a change to the box or litter type, consider adding the new option before taking the existing boxes away to be sure your cat is open to change.
