The Anoka County Sheriff's Office has received reports from residents regarding an email scam. Residents say they have been sent email messages that report to be from local law enforcement notifying them of a sexual predator moving into their neighborhood.

County officials say if you receive any such email, do not open the message or click on links the message may contain. This is becoming a common phishing scheme used by hackers to compromise your computer, officials say.

Not only does the email contain false information about an alleged sexual predator, clicking on any of the contained links installs malicious software on your computer designed to help the attacker obtain your personal information, passwords and personal contacts. The Anoka County Sheriff's Office does not send personal emails to inform citizens of predatory offenders.
