Plow Bunyan Roars Into Anoka County Library

From Northtown Library: What happens when you combine a Minnesota fact (snow plows) with Minnesota fiction (Paul Bunyan)? You get Plow Bunyan! Each year a contest is held at the Anoka County Fair to name one of the Anoka County Highway Department’s snow plows. This year’s winning name, Plow Bunyan, was a literary opportunity for the library to partner with the Highway Department for special activities and programs starting in January and lasting through the end of February

“Plow Bunyan’s been busy lately and this is a great way to have a little fun with winter and the snow it brings, while bringing more people into our libraries to learn about the season,” said Anoka County Commissioner and Library Board Liaison Mike Gamache.

The Plow Bunyan celebration kicks off at the Northtown Library in Blaine on Saturday, January 21, with a special story time at 10:15 a.m. The rest of the day will be filled with winter related arts and activities.

Throughout the month families can write questions (and get answers!) to Plow Bunyan’s drivers using postcards and social media, take part in an online snow person contest, and read their way through a Plow Bunyan booklist. Weather permitting, Plow Bunyan might even visit a storytime!

“Every season presents an opportunity to learn,” said Anoka County Library Board President Dan Greensweig. “The Plow Bunyan activities let families explore the science, math, and history of winter in Minnesota.”
