2021 Severe Weather Awareness Week In Golden Valley During April 12–16

Minnesota’s Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 12–16, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (MNDPS) and the Golden Valley Fire Department want to ensure residents are educated and prepared for when the worst happens.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota experiences an average of 28 tornadoes per year, and a record was set in 2010 when 113 tornadoes touched down across the state.

Prepare Your Family

• Create an emergency plan with your entire family so everyone knows what to do in the event of severe weather, like a tornado.
• Practice your family plan during the state-wide tornado drills April 15. Use this time to build an emergency kit.
• Check with places your family spends time, such as schools, workplaces, and churches to learn what their emergency plans are. Share these plans with your entire family and talk about what you would do if your family was not together during a disaster.

The City of Golden Valley will be participating in state-wide tornado drills April 15, 1:45 and 6:45 pm. The City will also be testing its emergency notification system, GV Emergency, April 9, 6 pm.
