As part of its ongoing commitment to community policing and community health, the Golden Valley Police Department (GVPD) has entered into a mutually beneficial memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Normandale Community College to hire a community health student intern this spring and summer.

Through its Community Health Worker-Navigator Certificate Program, Normandale will provide the GVPD with a student intern to help build strong, trusting relationships with community members and create links between community members and systems of care. In turn, the student will receive credit for an internship—a crucial component of the Community Health Worker certificate program.

Golden Valley’s community health intern will be responsible for for building a health and human services database, providing direct services, and building community relationships and community capacity. Work in these areas may include:

  • conducting assessments of the City’s current social service agencies and resources
  • building relationships within health and social service agencies
  • assisting with case follow-ups
  • connecting community members to evidence-based programs and classes
  • promoting early intervention and developmental tracking for children in underserved neighborhoods
  • assisting with community engagement sessions to establish rapport with community members
  • increasing access to public health services through culturally competent outreach and education
  • helping create culturally specific resources as needed

The first internship will run April 15–July 15, 2021. The City expects to offer more of these internships in the future.
