As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) becomes more prevalent in Minnesota, the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission (HRC) urges community members to help stop the spread of misinformation, discrimination, and harassment. The HRC and Golden Valley Public Safety Department encourage community members to speak out against negative behaviors, including statements on social media about groups of people, and to provide support for fellow community members during this challenging time.

Viruses Don’t Discriminate

As information about COVID-19 continues to spread, there has been an increase in news reports of racism and discrimination targeting individuals who are, or appear to be of Chinese or Asian descent. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has appealed to the public to remain calm, and quell misinformation.

According to the CDC website, “Being Chinese or Asian American does not increase the chance of getting or spreading COVID-19. People, including those of Asian descent, are not at greater risk of acquiring and spreading [it] than other Americans. Viruses cannot target people from specific populations, ethnicities or racial backgrounds.”

Support Your Neighbors

Golden Valley has welcoming and caring residents, and it is in times like these where that welcoming and caring spirit is critical. With K–12 schools closing in Minnesota and social distancing measures being put in place, some residents may need assistance with everyday activities like childcare, dog walking, grocery shopping, etc.

If you have the ability to safely offer support to neighbors in need, please consider it. Check online or social media for suggestions from local human service organizations.
