Residents Reminded To Keep Yard Signs Out Of Public Right-Of-Way In Golden Valley

The majority of streets in Golden Valley have a ROW of either 50 or 60 feet.

The City of Golden Valley wants to remind residents to not install yard signs or other items in public right-of-way (ROW), as it violates Golden Valley City Code Section 105-8 (g).

The ROW refers to the street and the small gap of land between the street and people’s homes (see image). That gap of land, called a boulevard, is specifically dedicated for public purposes, such as street and utility work, and the City uses the space to maintain and construct roadways, sidewalks, sewer lines, gas lines, phone lines, and other utilities and to store snow.

The size of the boulevard adjacent to a property depends on the size of the dedicated ROW, the width of the street, and the location of the street within the ROW. The majority of streets in Golden Valley have a ROW of either 50 or 60 feet. For example: if the ROW is 60 feet and the street is 30 feet wide and centered on the ROW, then the boulevard on each side of the street would measure 15 feet. This is very common in Golden Valley but not the case for every street.

Since the City uses these boulevards when constructing roadways, sidewalks, and more, residents are prohibited from installing items like yard signs in these areas. Per City Code Section 105-8 (g), “No sign other than public signs shall be erected or placed upon any public street, right-of-way, public easement, or public land.”

Last week, the City of Golden Valley began removing yard signs and other items installed in the ROW, and the City recommends residents take this time to move the yard signs or other items themselves.
