The evening started at Target where officers helped each student pick out one new outfit and an item for each of their family members and themselves. The group then went to the department to wrap gifts, eat pizza, and play games.

Community Service Officer Laura Carlson, coordinator of this year’s event, noted aside from assisting local children and families during the holidays, the event is great for building relationships.

“The kids and families get to know the officer personally and see that they are real people just like them,” she said. “It’s a really great thing.”

More than $3,000 was raised for the event through generous donations made to the Crime Prevention Fund from Rudy Luther Toyota, General Mills, and residents. Target also donated over $250 in gift cards to the program. The Crime Prevention Fund ended up with over $800 worth of extra gift cards which were donated to PRISM for their Holiday Toy Drive.

The GVPD and the Crime Prevention Fund are also hoping to partner on an additional Shop With A Cop program in 2020, during the back to school time of year. More information will be available in the new year.
