Elementary STEAM Nights

Elementary STEAM Nights focus on engaging students and families in hands-on activities that highlight the connection among science, technology, engineering, art, and math. In September, Pine Bend Elementary School, Salem Hills Elementary School, and the Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program held STEAM Nights to bring students and families together to learn. At Salem Hills and Atheneum, students showed their parents how to code, design on a 3D printer, and use a green screen app. The night also offered offline activities such as journal making and building the tallest structures from marshmallows and toothpicks.

This year was Pine Bend’s first STEAM Night. Students and their families were invited to tour the school forest, learn about the school gardens and design their own garden, and see the Simley Robotics Team’s robot. Students and parents also built their own robots, tried duplicating musical notes by filling glasses with water, and learned from a 3M Visiting Wizard, a volunteer from 3M who taught students and families about magnets with a presentation and hands-on demonstrations.

At the end of both STEAM Nights, the Friends of the Inver Glen Library offered each student a book to bring home and read with their families. Thank you to everyone who made the STEAM Nights a success.
