Teen Slams Into Semi On I-494 In Dakota County

The 17-year-old admitted he was looking at directions on his phone, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, MN — Authorities say the family of a 17-year-old is lucky to have him alive this holiday season after a distracted driving-related crash that could have ended up much worse.

The teen was driving on Interstate 494 just east of Highway 52 in Inver Grove Heights when he slammed his vehicle into the back of a semi.

The teen admitted he was looking at directions on his phone when he crashed on Dec. 10, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. He remarkably survived the collision.

"Distracted driving is a leading cause of death on Minnesota roads," says the state patrol.

"Please put the distractions away and phones down while driving."
