Thomas Tonda Given 180 Days in Jail, Community Service for Attack on IGH Hockey Coach

A 50-year-old St. Paul man was sentenced today to 180 days in jail—with a stayed prison sentence of 21 months—as a result of his attack on his son's hockey coach last December. 

Thomas Angelo Tonda was also given 350 hours of community service and 50 days of Sentence-to-Serve time—an alternate form of community service. 

"Assaulting and threatening a youth athletics coach in this manner is extremely disturbing behavior," Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom said after sentencing. "We are pleased to have brought Thomas Tonda to justice for his criminal conduct." 

According to a criminal complaint, Tonda began screaming at his son's hockey coach during a practice after the coach disciplined his son following an on-ice incident, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint says Tonda placed the victim in a choke hold and, after being separated from the coach, threatened to kill the man.

Tonda pleaded guilty to felony terroristic threats on Aug. 17.
