Last month, the Inver Grove Heights City Council legalized domestic chicken-keeping in our fair city. Now, we want to know—do you plan on taking advantage of your newfound freedom?
The ordinance stipulates anyone getting their Laura Ingals Wilder on must notify their neighbors of their intent to wrangle poultry, and chicken-related disputes between neighbors will ultimately be adjudicated by the city council. Potential applicants also must also pay a licensing fee of $25. (You can download an application from the city website here)
The path to legalization was somewhat fraught with tension over whether or not this new suburban hobby would lower property values and make for smelly, noisy nuisances across the community.
Now that the ordinance has passed, though, do you think you might keep chickens this summer? What do you plan on doing with them—eating them, eating their eggs, or using them as "mobile lawn ornaments," as Oakdale resident Les Larson called them in a recent Southwest Review profile? Leave your answer in the comments section, or even share a picture of your coop and birds on the Boards!
