Budding Farmers Program Blooms this Summer at Excelsior Farmers' Market

The budding farmers' program is a summer healthy food enrichment program perfect for children (budding farmers) between the ages of three and 10. Budding farmers develop an appreciation and understanding of healthy food that can last a lifetime.

The Budding Farmers program educates children in fun and engaging ways about seasonal fruits and vegetables that are available at the Excelsior Farmers' Market. The program engages children, parents and educators with fun and educational take-home lesson plans, kid-friendly recipes, art projects, games and more.

The Excelsior Farmers' Market is scheduled to open Thursday, May 16, at 2 p.m.

How the Budding Farmers Program Works:

For 10 consecutive weeks beginning in July, participants in Budding Farmers receive fun and educational materials that focus on a seasonal fruit or vegetable available at the Excelsior Farmers Market. Beginning the first week of the program, Budding Farmers receive a Budding Farmers tote bag, the “Budding Farmers Fun Book,” the “Budding Farmers Passport,” a Budding Farmers “Power Squad” card and the first packet of fun and educational materials (the weekly Booster Pack).

Each consecutive week Budding Farmers will receive an all new Booster Pack full of exciting educational materials at the Excelsior Farmers Market. Each weekly Booster Pack contains four cards with supporting materials that focus on one seasonal fruit or vegetable. Booster Pack cards are easy-to-follow, colorful, and clip right into the “Budding Famers Fun Book.”

Each Booster Pack contains:

  • Information about the seasonal fruit or vegetable
  • A hands-on lesson about sprouting, planting, harvesting, or preserving
  • A kid-friendly recipe to prepare together
  • A fun art project

The Budding Farmers program is fun and interactive: Budding Farmers will cook, grow, learn, taste, smell, feel and get creative with their food. Each week Budding Farmers will learn about and try something healthy and new.
