Verdict: I'm a Lunch Lady Wannabe

The District 197 Summer Meals Program is a fun way to give back to the community.

I'm thinking about adding "lunch lady wannabe" to my title.

Through Neighbors, Inc. I was able to coordinate volunteers to serve lunch for three days this week at Summer Meals Program. The program serves a free meal to anyone in the district under the age of 18. We served many kids in summer classes and sports camps, as well as kids just stopping by for a healthy meal. If you're interested in checking out the program, details are on the attached PDF.

I'm telling you, being a "lunch lady" is actually a pretty fun experience.

Others who helped out include Eagan Local Editor David Henke, Inver Grove Heights Local Editor Jeff Roberts and Assistant Local Editor Anna Schier.

In addition, Patch reader and Mendota Heights resident Yelva Lynfield joined us. Umm, how cool is that? Yelva ran the cookie station, and said she enjoyed seeing all the young faces and liked how the program provided them a free meal.

She didn't even mind when one or two kids came back to ask for a second treat.

It's always a pleasure to meet Patch users, but it was extra cool to work along side and chat with Yelva.

We also met Thomson Reuters employee Vickie Nammerschmidt. Vickie has been volunteering in the cafeteria as well and is planning to volunteer again later in the summer.

Our fearless leader, Cindy Ennis of the Sibley kitchen staff, was patient with our chatter and showed us how to do our tasks efficiently. It's obvious that she cares about the kids and making sure the kitchen is running smoothly.

If anyone is interested in filling an open breakfast or lunch volunteer slot at either Sibley or Garlough this summer, send an email to Shari at Neighbors, Inc.: shari@neighborsmn.org.
