Mendota City Council Plans for Veteran's Park Gazebo Overhaul

The city reviewed bids Tuesday night for the $12,000 project in Veteran's Park.

"Waste not; Want not" is the theme of the Mendota City Council's approach to improvements.

The city recieved about $20,000 in through Dakota County this year, and has decided to use them to improve the ailing gazebo in the park and to build a storage shed for city property.

The council reviewed options for repairing the structure and replacing the roof at their meeting Tuesday night. Community Development Agency representative Lisa Henning said she received four preliminary bids for the project late Tuesday afternoon.

Details of the rehab could include:

  • New light fixtures
  • Removal of the cupola
  • Replacement of the roof
  • 40-year asphalt shingles with a weathered wood finish
  • Cedar wrapping of the posts
  • New wider railings
  • Removal of benches
  • Possible addition of ornamental cornices

By foregoing some of the ornamentation and the $1,400 cost of a new cupola, the project could come in under-budget based on preliminary bids.

"It's going to be a wonderful gazebo—much nicer than what we have now," said council member Alan Ralston. "Maybe that $1,400 would be better spent on our storage shed."

The project is on schedule to be completed by Sept. 8, said Henning.

Planning for the storage facility will be the second phase of the project.
