Mendota Heights City Engineer Recommended for Squadron Commander in Duluth

The official decision will be made next week.

John Mazzitello, Mendota Heights city engineer, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Air Force National Guard last December.

Just a few months later, it looks like he will be receiving another promotion, this time to squadron commander of the 148th Civil Engineering Squadron of the 148th Air National Guard Wing of Duluth, Minnesota.

His rank will stay the same, but his job responsibilities will grow. Mazzitello oversees operations of the civil engineering squadron, and with the promotion he will also oversee the squadron’s emergency operations that serve the base, including the fire department, explosive ordinance disposal and disaster response.

“It’s a little bit on the unexpected side,” said Mazzitello. “Things are pretty rank-dependent. The more senior you are the more rank you get. The senior leadership positions come with time, but as you move up the chain, the positions get fewer and fewer.”

Col. Penny Dieryck confirmed that Mazzitello has been recommended for the position, but is said she can't comment until the position is approved on May 9 or 10.

Mazzitello said his original goal was to reach retirement with the Guard, which he will be eligible for next September after 20 years of service. But with the new position, he would have incentive to stay on longer. In addition to being an honor, Mazzitello said it is a “phenomenal career opportunity.”

The promotion may require an additional day of work during their monthly drill weekends, but the city is prepared to accommodate the change in schedule.

Mazzitello is the only candidate being forwarded for the position, and an official announcement is anticipated for the weekend of May 21-22.
