Created in 2004, the band initially featured five female musicians who had not previously performed together. The makeup of the band has changed some over the years. Four young Irish women — vocalists Mairéad Carlin, Éabha McMahon and Megan Walsh, and violinist Tara McNeill— currently make up the band, whose music has been described as “Riverdance for the voice.”

Celtic Woman made its American television debut in early 2005 with a PBS concert special that sold out the Helfix in Dublin. Celtic Woman’s music was so popular that the group followed the PBS performance with a U.S. concert tour. The group has since maintained a strong presence on U.S. television, and Celtic Woman’s Emmy-nominated concert specials are regularly featured during PBS pledge drives.

Celtic Woman is a familiar name on Billboard’s World Music Chart. The group’s self-titled debut CD topped it for an unprecedented 81 weeks, remaining there until it was replaced by a second album in 2006, “A Christmas Celebration,” which topped the chart for 12 consecutive weeks.

The band has released a slew of albums — 11 in all — that together have sold more than 10 million CDs and DVDs worldwide. Over the past decade, Celtic Woman has achieved multi-platinum success in nine countries in the classical crossover and world music genres — the only all-female band to achieve such a feat.
