The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is hiring baseball and softball umpires this summer. Sometimes buying gear necessary for the job, like a face mask, shin guards and chest protector, can be an expensive barrier to becoming an ump.

This year a new program hopes to help with that challenge by offering umpiring gear to rent for the season. Details on the program, the job and how to apply are below.

Gear Available to Rent

All gear costs $10 to rent for the season and comes with a ball bag, indicator and plate brush to use for the season at no additional cost.

Job Details

Pay: Starts at $35 per game for 10U leagues and steadily increases up to $65 per game for 18U leagues.

Hours: Season starts May 15 and runs through the end of July. Hours are dependent on availability, weeknights and Saturdays during the day.

Qualifications: At least 16 years old, submit and pass a Criminal Background Check, complete CDC Concussion Awareness Training, ability to interact well with adults and children, ability to understand and apply rules.
