Minneapolis Public Schools Returns To Post-Labor Day Start

The Minneapolis Board of Education has approved proposed calendars for school years 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22, returning Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) to starting school after Labor Day. In addition, the calendars maintain a two-week winter break and weeklong spring break.

The proposed calendars were created after several months of work by the District Calendar Committee, which was composed of members representing both staff and families. The calendars also received significant public input.

More than 11,000 people visited the MPS website to review the proposed calendars, and 7,095 people completed an online calendar survey. The survey responses overwhelmingly supported returning the start of school to the day after Labor Day (85%), and overall satisfaction with the proposed calendars was 81%. In addition, calendars were presented to linguistic parent advisory committees and students in MPS’s citywide student group. Last fall, MPS conducted a budget values survey, which also showed staff and families were open to changes in the length of the school calendar.
