35th Annual Young Artist Performance

The Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra will present two concerts geared toward young listeners - and those who are young at heart.

The Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra will present concerts geared toward young listeners—and those who are young at heart—Sunday afternoons on February 19th and 26th in Minnetonka and Wayzata. These two concerts feature the first-place winner of the 2016 Young Artist Competition, a program sponsored by the Music Association of Minnetonka. This year’s talented performer is Clara Schubilske, a violinist who is a senior at Mounds View High School. She will play the Violin Concerto in e minor by Julius Conus, a rarely-heard work composed at the turn of the 20th century.

Other pieces on the program are Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (with narration) and John Williams’ March from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Each concert begins at 3:00pm; no ticket is required and attendance is free-of-charge. Receptions will follow each concert. Free-will offerings are gratefully accepted.

The February 19th concert is at Minnetonka United Methodist Church, located just west of County Road 101 in Minnetonka. The street address is 17611 Lake Street Extension. On February 26th, the orchestra will be in Wayzata at Wayzata Community Church, 125 Wayzata Boulevard East.

The 2016 second-place winner is Kevin Nguyen, a senior at Maple Grove High School who plays piano. Selena Janzen, a violinist from Mankato East High School, won third place at the competition last autumn.

This annual scholarship competition for high school musicians encourages those whose artistic qualities, potential, and desire compel them to continue the study of music. The Young Artist Program’s goal is to give confidence to young musicians as they continue the tradition of music performance. Applicants to the competition must be high school juniors or seniors, and perform on any orchestral instrument, piano, or voice. A new novice program by the Music Association of Minnetonka will provide an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to experience the audition process without the competition element. The 2017 auditions will take place this autumn.
